Suriname launches new passport application services in New York

Suriname has officially launched the Suriname Passport Application Services in New York to better serve its diaspora. The service was inaugurated by President Jennifer Simons during her visit to the United States for the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Melvin Bouva and representatives from VFS Global, the President stated that the initiative aims to modernize government services and strengthen the connection with Surinamese citizens living abroad. While the new facility facilitates applications, the Surinamese government maintains sole authority over the assessment, approval, and issuance of all passports.

Separately, Suriname has implemented legislative changes to address issues regarding dual nationality for athletes. A new law allows diaspora athletes to obtain Surinamese nationality specifically for representing the national team without forfeiting their original nationality, such as Dutch citizenship.
