Suriname launches Tourism First to diversify economy

Suriname has launched the ‘Tourism First’ initiative to accelerate the development of its tourism sector and diversify the national economy. The program aims to reduce reliance on mining and upcoming oil and gas revenues by establishing tourism as a sustainable, high-quality economic pillar.

Managed by the Project Preparation Unit (PPU), the initiative focuses on preparing the country for large-scale investments. Key objectives include improving laws and regulations, conducting feasibility studies to select realistic projects, and ensuring investments create opportunities for local entrepreneurs and workers. PPU Director John Goedschalk emphasized the need for timely preparation to prevent tourism from being overshadowed by the growing oil and gas sector.

The program also prioritizes social impact and sustainability. It seeks to involve the government, private sector, financiers, and local communities, including indigenous and tribal groups. By developing ecotourism projects in areas like the Amazon rainforest, the initiative aims to leverage natural and cultural wealth while preserving biodiversity and providing economic benefits to local populations.
