Suriname lawmakers criticize EBS over recurring power outages

The National Assembly of Suriname has raised urgent questions regarding new loadshedding measures implemented by Energie Bedrijven Suriname (EBS). Political leaders, including NPS faction leader Jerrel Pawiroredjo and BEP faction leader Ronny Asabina, have criticized the utility company for failing to anticipate growing energy demands through effective statistics and forecasting.

Lawmakers argue that the recurring power outages are a symptom of structural policy failures and poor governance rather than isolated incidents. Pawiroredjo highlighted that reliable electricity is a fundamental requirement for Suriname’s economic growth, industrialization, and digitalization. Asabina noted that the information provided by EBS lacks transparency and is difficult to verify, pointing out that a power outage even disrupted a recent parliamentary meeting.

The ongoing energy instability is impacting both households and the broader economy, as businesses struggle to maintain production levels. While the Vice President has acknowledged the urgency of the situation, critics suggest that the current approach relies too heavily on crisis management rather than long-term strategic planning.
