Suriname lawmakers debate EBS management amid new loadshedding

Suriname's National Assembly is facing intense debate following the return of loadshedding during the dry season. Members of both coalition and opposition parties have raised concerns regarding the management and preparedness of Energiebedrijven Suriname (EBS) to meet growing electricity demands.

NPS faction leader Jerrel Pawiroredjo criticized the lack of proactive planning by EBS, noting that the utility should have implemented measures based on previous experiences to account for increased connections and consumption. BEP faction leader Ronnie Asabina questioned whether the outages stem from limited capacity, high fuel costs, or internal financial issues. Asabina specifically highlighted a lack of financial transparency, stating that the most recent annual report available may date back to 2018. He argued that such outdated information prevents effective policy development and hinders the Assembly's ability to perform its oversight duties.

VHP faction leader Asiskumar Gajadien suggested the issue extends beyond EBS, pointing to a broader need for improved oversight of all state-owned enterprises to ensure sustainable energy policy and infrastructure investment.
