Suriname lawmakers flag inconsistent asset declaration procedures
Members of Suriname's National Assembly have raised concerns regarding the inconsistent implementation of mandatory asset and income declarations intended for the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Parliamentarians reported that some notaries are opening sealed envelopes containing sensitive information to verify contents before re-sealing them. This practice has sparked fears regarding potential privacy violations. Additionally, officials noted significant discrepancies in the fees charged by various notaries for this service, with prices ranging from SRD 1,100 to SRD 2,500.
The mandatory registration requirement, aimed at combating corruption among political officeholders, is subject to a deadline expiring in mid-month following a previous six-month extension. Lawmakers have called for the Minister to intervene to ensure uniform procedures and standardized pricing to maintain public trust in the anti-corruption system.
