Suriname leaders face political developments and travel scrutiny

In Suriname, the VHP party has announced plans to commission two busts of former President Chan Santokhi by 2027. Asis Gajadien, vice-chairman of the VHP, presented the initiative during a meeting in Nickerie to honor Santokhi’s contributions to the party and the nation during his presidency from 2020 to 2025.

Separately, President Jennifer Simons is traveling to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. This marks her second such trip in a short period, drawing scrutiny regarding her previous pledge to limit foreign travel to reduce state costs. Simons defended the trip by stating that Suriname’s participation is essential as all nations attend the annual meeting, maintaining that every trip must yield tangible benefits for the country.
