Suriname maintains Tier 1 status despite human trafficking resource shortages

Suriname has maintained its Tier 1 status in the fight against human trafficking, an international recognition of the country's efforts. However, Minister of Justice and Security Harish Monorath has warned that authorities are struggling with significant resource shortages, including a lack of personnel, vehicles, and operational equipment.

Human trafficking in the country often involves foreign migrants being lured under false pretenses for exploitation in prostitution or forced labor. These activities are reported in sectors such as retail and gold mining, with women and children identified as particularly vulnerable groups.

While several cases have been registered and some have led to prosecution, officials note that current data does not fully reflect the true scale of the problem. Minister Monorath emphasized that additional investments are required to equip the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) unit, the Suriname Police Force, and the Public Prosecutor's Office to effectively identify victims, collect evidence, and ensure long-term protection for survivors.
