Suriname Minister Dirk Currie to integrate culture into education

Dirk Currie, the Minister of Education, Science and Culture in Suriname, has announced plans to structurally integrate culture and heritage into the national education system. The initiative aims to foster awareness of cultural diversity and the importance of both tangible and intangible heritage from a young age.

Currie noted that the Directorate of Culture has received insufficient attention in recent years. He emphasized that cultural appreciation should not be limited to annual events like Heritage Month but should become a daily part of society. This includes teaching children the significance of historical buildings and monuments, such as those in Paramaribo.

The Ministry intends to increase awareness through targeted communication, public information, and the development of an accessible national cultural agenda. Furthermore, Currie aims to shift the perception of the cultural sector from being purely a cost to becoming an economic driver that generates financial returns.
