Suriname Ministry of Regional Development seeks IDB support for new headquarters

Suriname’s Minister of Regional Development, Miquella Huur, met with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on August 31 to discuss urgent infrastructure needs, including a new ministry headquarters.

The ministry’s previous office on Roseveltkade was lost to heavy wind gusts in 2024, forcing over 200 employees into temporary, overcrowded facilities on Crommelinstraat. A vision has been developed for a new sustainable headquarters at Zwartehovenbrugstraat.

Beyond the central office, the ministry is seeking improvements for district commissariats in Sipaliwini to allow officials to work from their own administrative areas rather than Paramaribo. Discussions also covered the expansion of the Nyun Combe Foundation to better accommodate families from the interior. Adriana La Valley, the IDB Country Representative, noted that project proposals must be submitted through the Ministry of Finance and Planning for consideration.
