Suriname National Assembly postpones citizenship law debate

The National Assembly of Suriname (DNA) has postponed the debate on a proposed amendment to the Citizenship and Residency Act until Monday at 09:30. The delay follows the decision by the bill's initiators to submit an amendment and additional insights for parliamentary review.

The proposed legislation aims to refine nationality policies, specifically targeting individuals of Surinamese descent living abroad. A primary focus of the amendment is to facilitate easier access to Surinamese citizenship for professional athletes in the diaspora, which could enhance the quality of the national sports teams and strengthen ties between the country and its citizens abroad.

The initiative was introduced by parliamentarians Ebu Jones, Steven Reyme, Jeffrey Lau, and Edgar Sampie. Due to the need for further study of the new amendments, the assembly has opted to postpone its scheduled recess to ensure the matter is addressed.
