Suriname officials and health advocates emphasize diabetes prevention

Health officials and advocates in Suriname are calling for increased awareness and lifestyle changes to combat the rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Liesbeth Berggraaf, chair of the Stichting Diabetes Educatie Suriname, stated that approximately 80 percent of type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and nutritious eating.

Berggraaf expressed concern regarding the age of onset in Suriname, noting that many individuals are diagnosed between their 40s and 50s. She warned that the chronic condition can lead to severe complications such as blindness, kidney problems, and amputations if not managed or detected early.

In a separate meeting, Suriname’s Minister of Health, Welfare, and Labor, André Misiekaba, met with representatives from the Diabetes Vereniging Suriname (DVS). During the discussion, Minister Misiekaba emphasized individual responsibility in maintaining health, encouraging citizens to engage in at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity to mitigate health risks.
