Suriname officials raise concerns over Cevihas mismanagement and Canawaima governance

Surinamese Parliamentarian Raymond Sapoen has called for urgent government intervention regarding Cevihas N. V., the Central Fishery Harbors. Sapoen reported severe mismanagement and financial instability, estimating that the company has accumulated debts between USD 6 million and USD 8 million over the last five to seven years. He highlighted critical deficiencies in safety regulations, sanitation, hygiene, and physical infrastructure, which he warned could damage the reputation of Suriname's vital fisheries sector.

Separately, NDP Parliamentarian Aziez Salarbaks has raised concerns regarding the governance of the Canawaima Management Company. Salarbaks alleged that an influential individual residing abroad is exerting undue influence over the company's operations. Reports suggest this individual is Hanisha Jairam, a former president-commissioner of Canawaima who was recently sworn in as an ambassador to India. The allegations include questions regarding administrative authority, specifically noting that a terminal manager and an advisor were placed on inactive status without the knowledge of the responsible minister.
