Suriname opens Heritage Village to mark end of Heritage Month
The Heritage Village opened at Independence Square in Paramaribo, marking the final phase of Heritage Month 2026 in Suriname. The three-day festival features music, art, traditional cuisine, and cultural traditions.
During the opening, President Jennifer Simons emphasized that the event serves as more than a cultural celebration. She highlighted the importance of national unity and the responsibility to leave a secure and connected society for future generations. Simons noted that while Suriname possesses immense cultural diversity, true unity requires mutual respect and connection in daily life.
Rachel Pinas, chair of the presidential working group for Heritage Month, noted that the festival's locations, including the Palmentuin, the Waterkant, and Fort Zeelandia, serve as a historical backdrop that tells the story of the nation.
