Suriname opposition leader cautions president on new loans during UK talks with Bank of America
VHP parliamentary leader Asiskumar Gajadien warned President Jennifer Geerlings‑Simons that discussions in England with Bank of America and other international investors should not lead to additional borrowing beyond the state‑debt plan approved by the National Assembly. He stressed that the government must follow legal procedures and cited the $1.6 billion outstanding loan to Bank of America, part of a broader debt‑restructuring effort. Gajadien also pointed out that the Bureau of State Debt has not yet released its required July 1 annual accounts, urging the administration to avoid placing extra financial burdens on the population.
NDP fractie leader Rabin Parmessar added that the president’s visit does not automatically imply new loans, urging patience while the scheduled meetings proceed.
