Suriname Parliament disputes speaking rights of VHP member

A dispute has erupted in Suriname's National Assembly (DNA) regarding the speaking rights of VHP Member of Parliament Kishun Ramsukul. The conflict originated during a meeting on October 8, when Ramsukul, a member of a seven-person Commission of Rapporteurs, was called to speak earlier than expected after two coalition members unexpectedly withdrew.

While Ramsukul was in the parliamentary building, he was not yet in the assembly hall when his name was called. The VHP parliamentary group requested a short suspension to allow him to arrive, but the acting chairperson denied the request and moved to the next speaker.

DNA Chairman Ashwin Adhin has denied allegations that Ramsukul's right to speak was stripped. Adhin clarified that according to parliamentary rules, a member who is not present when called loses their turn in that specific round. He distinguished this from the formal removal of the floor, which occurs due to insults or disorder. Although Adhin later granted Ramsukul permission to speak, the VHP faction protested the initial handling of the situation and eventually walked out of the meeting. The VHP maintains that the rules were violated and that the governing majority should not use its seat count to silence opposition members.
