Suriname passes new law for virtual asset supervision

Suriname's National Assembly has passed the Virtual Asset Service Providers Supervision Act 2026. The legislation establishes the first legal framework for companies providing services related to virtual assets within the country.

Under the new law, the Central Bank of Suriname (CBvS) is designated as the supervisory authority. The framework governs the admission, licensing, registration, and oversight of service providers to ensure safe and responsible operations. Key requirements for providers include specific standards for capital, business operations, and integrity. The law also mandates the separation of client funds and virtual assets from the providers' own assets to protect consumer holdings.

Additionally, the regulation aims to align Suriname with Recommendation 15 of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism, enhancing the nation's international financial reputation.
