Suriname targets economic diversification via oil, agriculture, and education
Suriname is implementing a multi-sector strategy to diversify its economy ahead of significant expected revenues from the offshore oil and gas industry. The government aims to prevent oil wealth from dominating long-term development by strengthening other sectors, particularly agriculture and technology.
In the agricultural sector, President Jennifer Simons has emphasized the need to increase domestic production to ensure food security. Key initiatives include providing financial support to rice farmers, upgrading equipment, and restructuring the Anne van Dijk Rice Research Center. This transition requires long-term investments in infrastructure, financing, and specialized education.
To support these economic shifts, the government is focusing on educational reform to align human capital with new industrial needs. Plans include developing a national educational framework that connects primary schooling to vocational and higher education, specifically targeting skills in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and the energy sector. The Suriname 3.0 Summit is currently being used to establish a national roadmap and identify the necessary skills and supply chains required for a sustainable, diversified economy.
