Suriname plans economic diversification via agriculture and housing protections
The government of Suriname, led by President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, is working to diversify the national economy ahead of expected revenue from the oil and gas industry. A primary focus is the revitalization of the agricultural sector, which has faced decades of neglect. Challenges to the agro-sector include inadequate infrastructure, limited financing, insufficient technical support, and a shortage of skilled labor. The administration aims to improve education to meet agricultural needs, though experts note that economic attractiveness, access to land, and technology are also vital for long-term success.
Simons is also addressing potential housing market volatility caused by the oil boom. To prevent rising land and property prices from pricing out local citizens, the government plans to use oil revenues to strengthen the local housing market. Strategies include reviving housing programs with low-interest loans and developing land with pre-installed utilities to lower costs for residents. Additionally, the government intends to encourage separate housing developments specifically for foreign investors and expatriates to reduce competition for the local housing supply.
