Suriname plans energy sector expansion to meet rising demand
Suriname is undergoing a transformation in its energy sector to address growing electricity demand and the need for sustainable development. The sector encompasses electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and oil and gas production. While the Afobakadam dam has historically provided low-cost electricity, management of the facility was transferred to Staatsolie in 2020.
To combat recent power shortages and load shedding, experts have proposed the phased construction of a modern modular power plant at the former Bruynzeelter site in Beekhuizen. This modular approach using RICE units could allow capacity to scale up to 300 MW to meet rising demand. The plan includes preparing engines for a potential future transition from liquid fuels to domestic natural gas.
Legislative developments, such as the Electricity Act of 2016, have facilitated market liberalization by allowing Independent Power Producers to participate. Additionally, the country continues to explore renewable options, including solar energy, following previous large-scale projects.
