Suriname police arrest suspect in fatal shooting and investigate airport assault
Surinamese authorities have arrested a suspect, identified as L. Z. (alias ‘Afieka’), following a fatal shooting in the Snesibergi area of the Brokopondo district. The suspect reportedly attempted to surrender to police at a nearby camp on Friday, October 23, 2026, before being taken into custody the following day. During the arrest, police seized a handbag containing various types of ammunition.
Following the arrest, the suspect and the victim's body were transported via chartered aircraft to Zorg en Hoop Airport in Paramaribo. Upon arrival, a group of individuals, believed to be associates of the victim, stormed the airport and assaulted the suspect. Police officers intervened to rescue the suspect from the crowd, after which he was taken to the Academic Hospital Paramaribo for medical treatment.
The Korps Politie Suriname has launched an investigation into both the original fatal shooting and the subsequent assault on the suspect. Authorities stated they will take strict action against those who took the law into their own hands.
