Suriname police arrest two suspects in online fraud investigations

The Fraud and Economic Crimes department of the Suriname Police Force (KPS) has arrested two suspects in separate online fraud investigations. The arrests followed tracking by the SIGMA intelligence unit.

The first suspect, identified as S. R., was detained regarding an incident of fraud and embezzlement involving a Facebook Marketplace advertisement. A victim transferred SRD 4,300 to the suspect's bank account to purchase a mobile phone, but the device was never delivered.

The second suspect, S. S., was arrested following a report of alleged investment fraud. A victim reported being lured by an online advertisement to invest in cryptocurrency with promises of doubling their money. The victim transferred a total of SRD 37,500, but was repeatedly asked for additional payments whenever they attempted to withdraw funds.

Both individuals have been placed in custody following consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office to facilitate further investigation. The KPS has advised citizens to remain vigilant during online transactions and to verify the reliability of sellers and investment providers, particularly when faced with requests for upfront payments or promises of exceptionally high returns.
