Suriname Police Corps faces integrity crisis over flawed recruitment and political appointments

Minister Harish Monorath of Justice and Police said the Suriname Police Corps (KPS) is suffering an integrity crisis rooted in inadequate recruitment and selection processes in earlier intakes, notably in 2018 and 2020. Candidates with questionable backgrounds were admitted to the police academy and later appointed as officers, resulting in recent incidents where police personnel were linked to criminal activity and eroding public confidence.

Opposition leader Jerrel Pawiroredjo highlighted the broader governance issue, linking the corps' troubles to political influence over senior police appointments and persistent organisational problems such as missing seized assets, detainee escapes, staff shortages and internal misconduct. He called for transparent selection procedures and greater independence of the police from political interference. The minister pledged a systematic purge of officers who fail integrity standards and a renewed focus on restoring professionalism, reliability and public trust within the KPS.
