Suriname police officers arrested in mercury theft investigation

Authorities in Suriname are investigating the theft of eleven cylinders of mercury from the Geyersvlijt police station. Each cylinder reportedly weighed approximately 35.8 kilograms. The stolen material had previously been seized by authorities and was being stored on the station's premises.

Several police officers have been arrested in connection with the theft. Officers R. C. and A. K. from the Fraud Department, along with C. B. from the Paramaribo Regional Assistance Team (RBTP), have been detained following consultations with the Public Prosecution Service. In total, seven individuals have been apprehended as part of the investigation, though some suspects were later released.

The incident has raised significant concerns regarding internal security procedures and the integrity of the police force. Additionally, the theft of mercury poses substantial environmental and public health risks due to the hazardous nature of the substance.
