Suriname Police Seek Driver After Two Pedestrian Fatalities

The Korps Politie Suriname reported two separate traffic accidents that killed pedestrians in July 2026. The first incident occurred on 23 July on Zwartenhovenbrugstraat in Paramaribo, where a man, believed to be homeless, was struck from behind by a car that fled the scene. Police are urging the public to provide any information about the vehicle or driver.

The second fatal crash happened on 26 July at the Latourweg and Franklinweg intersection. A male pedestrian was killed when a 25‑year‑old driver of a white Toyota Vitz, attempting to overtake a vehicle, failed to notice the crossing person. The driver held a valid Surinamese licence and was not under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle sustained extensive front‑end damage. Investigations remain ongoing for both cases.
