Suriname political tension rises over Telecommunications Authority
Political tensions have escalated in Suriname following a leadership crisis at the Telecommunications Authority Suriname (TAS). NPS parliamentary leader Jerrel Pawiroredjo criticized the organization's management, describing the situation as having completely derailed and calling for a complete overhaul, including the removal of the Supervisory Board.
The controversy involves reports of police involvement during the departure of Director Wendy Jap-A-Joe, an incident Pawiroredjo characterized as a “shameless display.” While the ABOP faction has defended Jap-A-Joe, leading to confrontations within the National Assembly, other officials have raised questions regarding the independence of state institutions and the extent of political influence over the agency.
Disputes have also emerged regarding the legality of appointments and whether political promises were made concerning the director's tenure. The situation has sparked a broader debate over administrative accountability and the relationship between political parties and government agencies in the country.
