Suriname politician calls for investigation into Mennonite settlement

Rabin Parmessar, the NDP parliamentary group leader, has called for an investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office into the arrival of Mennonite families in Suriname's Tibiti region. Parmessar alleges that these families may have been brought to the country under false pretenses, raising concerns regarding potential human trafficking.

During a visit to the area with MP Jennifer Vreedzaam and environmental activist Erlan Sleur, it was observed that at least three Mennonite families have established residences, storage facilities, and other infrastructure, which has involved clearing portions of the surrounding forest. Work in the area has been temporarily halted.

Reports indicate that one family relocated from Belize under the impression they would receive 20 hectares of agricultural land. Upon arrival, they reportedly discovered they must pay for the land and that expansion of their activities is not automatically permitted. Parmessar stated that the families appear to have been insufficiently informed about their rights, obligations, and Surinamese legal regulations. He expressed concern regarding a potential influx of dozens or even hundreds of other foreign families seeking to settle in the country.
