Suriname prepares for oil revenue and global market volatility

Suriname is facing a dual challenge regarding its energy sector: preparing for imminent oil and gas revenues while managing current international market instability. Alexander van Petten, chairman of the Surinamese Bankers Association, has emphasized that the nation's financial institutions and regulatory structures must be strengthened to handle expected economic growth. He highlighted the need for transparency, responsible leadership, and infrastructure improvements, citing Norway’s management of natural resources as a model for long-term stability.

Simultaneously, Minister of Oil, Gas, and Environment Patrick Brunings has noted that Middle East tensions are complicating domestic fuel price management. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and damage to regional pipelines have impacted global supply, causing crude oil prices to fluctuate between $80 and $100 per barrel. These international pressures make it increasingly difficult for the Surinamese government to maintain fuel price ceilings, particularly for diesel, which remains essential for heavy transport and economic activity.
