Suriname President Jennifer Simons advocates for economic diversification

Suriname President Jennifer Simons has called for economic diversification to ensure long-term national prosperity. Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Simons emphasized that the country must not become solely dependent on its offshore oil and gas sectors for economic growth.

Simons argued that the temporary wealth generated by natural resources should be strategically invested to build a broader economic foundation. This strategy includes strengthening the agricultural, tourism, and technological sectors to make the nation more resilient against fluctuations in global commodity markets. The government aims to use resource revenues to foster sustainable development and food security through innovative agricultural practices.

In a separate context regarding national development, Simons has also addressed the country's educational system. During the National Education Congress, she noted that the current system still carries characteristics of its colonial heritage, which she suggested may hinder the development of independence, creativity, and resilience in students.
