Suriname President outlines economic priorities and regional development

President Jennifer Simons has outlined economic priorities for the 2027 fiscal year, focusing on stimulating investment, increasing government revenue, and improving public services. AmCham Suriname has welcomed these plans, noting opportunities for growth in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, digitalization, and local content, while emphasizing the need for fiscal discipline and responsible debt management.

To ensure economic stability, AmCham advocates for economic diversification to reduce reliance on oil revenues and calls for a fairer distribution of the tax burden, particularly to relieve pressure on small and medium-sized enterprises.

In the Coronie district, President Simons highlighted plans to retain youth through investments in agriculture, local production, and vocational training. She identified potential in coconut oil, honey, tourism, and cosmetic production. Additionally, she noted future economic possibilities in offshore activities and port developments, stressing the importance of specialized education to prepare the local workforce for these emerging sectors.
