Suriname President Simons Defends Economic Policy After UK Investment Talks

President Jennifer Simons clarified that she never pledged direct reductions in food and utility prices, noting that price levels depend on production costs, exchange rates, taxes and global market conditions. Analyst R. Pinas emphasized that her promises focused on reforming Suriname’s economic system rather than guaranteeing lower consumer prices.

Simons returned from a work visit to the United Kingdom on 26 July 2026, where she and Finance Minister Adelien Wijnerman met representatives of Bank of America and other firms in the oil‑and‑gas and finance sectors. She said the discussions were constructive and highlighted the need for international expertise to develop a sovereign wealth fund and attract investment for Suriname’s transition to greater oil‑gas revenue.

The president stressed that building strong contacts with global financial institutions is essential for the country’s development and future economic growth.
