Suriname President to present 2027 budget amid venue controversy

Suriname's President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons is scheduled to deliver her annual policy address and present the 2027 draft budget during an extraordinary public meeting of the National Assembly on September 30, 2026.

Due to the event, significant traffic and security measures will be implemented in Paramaribo. Authorities will redirect traffic at several key intersections, including H.A.E. Arronstraat and Kleine Waterstraat. A security zone will be established around the National Assembly, prohibiting parking in several surrounding streets and squares. Vehicles found within the zone will be towed at the owner's expense.

The VHP parliamentary group has formally objected to the decision-making process regarding the event's location. While the address was traditionally held at the National Assembly building, a proposal was made to move it to the Congreshal to accommodate more guests. The VHP argues that the decision and its associated budget were presented as a 'fait accompli' without proper prior approval, citing a need to maintain parliamentary tradition and fiscal austerity.
