Suriname receives 21 containers of donated school supplies from Netherlands
Suriname has received a private donation from the Netherlands consisting of 21 containers of school supplies, including desks, chairs, laptops, televisions, and digital boards. The shipment is currently being stored under the supervision of the National Army. Approximately nine containers have already been distributed to schools in Para, Paramaribo, and Sipaliwini, with additional items designated for Huize Ashiana.
President Jennifer Simons and Education Minister Dirk Currie visited the storage site on September 29, 2026, to oversee the initiative. While the donation provides immediate relief for schools facing shortages, officials noted that the goods entered the country duty-free through the assistance of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, leaving Suriname responsible only for transport costs.
Minister Currie emphasized that while cooperation between the government, the private sector, and civil society is vital for building infrastructure, such partnerships should not replace the government's core responsibility to provide a stable and well-funded educational system. The distribution of the remaining materials will be coordinated by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the National Army.
