Suriname receives Ebola preparedness supplies from PAHO

Suriname has received personal protective equipment (PPE) from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to bolster its Ebola preparedness. The supplies, which include protective gowns, safety goggles, and respirator masks, are intended to strengthen infection prevention and protect healthcare workers.

Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport André Misiekaba stated that there are currently no Ebola cases in Suriname. The initiative is a precautionary measure in response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The government's strategy focuses on early detection, laboratory capacity, and rapid response capabilities.

PAHO/WHO representative in Suriname, Dr. Yafflo Ouattara, emphasized that preparedness must occur before a crisis begins to ensure a resilient health system. He noted that protecting healthcare providers is essential for the safety of patients, families, and the broader community. Health officials have advised the public to maintain hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing, and to seek medical attention if fever occurs alongside a relevant travel history.
