Suriname reinstates National Youth Parliament

Suriname is transitioning from the Youth Council Suriname (JRS) back to the National Youth Parliament (NJP), following a government decision prompted by low turnout in previous online elections. Minister of Youth Development and Sport, Lalini Gopal, announced the change after youth representatives presented a policy memorandum to President Jennifer Simons.

The memorandum, developed through district congresses and a National Youth Congress held in July and August, outlines key priorities for youth development. These include employment, mental health, education, sports, and regional development opportunities. Youth leaders, including JRS Chairman Shemar Rier, emphasized that the document serves as a charter to ensure the government addresses these critical issues.

Preparations for new youth parliament elections are currently underway. These elections are expected to take place before Suriname assumes the CARICOM chairmanship in 2027.
