Suriname reports rise in STIs among youth

The Dermatological Service in Suriname is reporting a significant rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly gonorrhea and syphilis. While the trend has been developing for some time, the situation has worsened over the last six to seven months.

Health officials expressed particular concern regarding the age of those affected. There is an increasing number of cases among individuals aged 25 and younger, with reports of infections even in children as young as 13 and 14. Debora Hordijk, head of the Counseling & Testing department, noted that many young people lack sufficient knowledge regarding STIs and the potential long-term consequences of untreated infections.

Medical experts warn that untreated gonorrhea can lead to infertility, while syphilis can cause serious damage to the nervous system if not addressed. The service has urged the public to seek professional testing rather than attempting self-treatment with antibiotics, noting that improper use or incorrect dosages can render treatments ineffective. Officials are calling for improved structural sexual education and increased involvement from parents and schools to address the growing public health issue.
