Suriname retired teachers face year-long salary delays
Retired teachers in Suriname, rehired by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (minOWC) to address educator shortages, have reportedly not received their salaries for a year. The delay has caused significant frustration among the staff, who feel abandoned by the government despite their efforts to maintain the national education system.
Gracia Valies-Ormskirk, director of General Formative Education (AVO) at Gracia Valies-Ormskirk, acknowledged the issue and stated that solutions are being sought. She noted that bureaucratic obstacles, including document processing difficulties and budget approval delays, have contributed to the situation. Efforts are currently underway to address the outstanding payments and improve communication between the teachers and the ministry.
