Suriname revises Mining Law to modernize sector regulations

Suriname is currently revising its Mining Law to create a more modern and predictable legal framework for the mining sector. The Ministry of Natural Resources aims to update outdated legislation to better reflect current industry developments and facilitate future investments.

The proposed reforms focus on clarifying procedures for granting, modifying, extending, and terminating mining rights to reduce ambiguity and increase legal certainty for both the government and private companies. Key components of the new framework include provisions for environmental protection, the preservation of cultural and archaeological heritage, and local content requirements designed to increase the involvement of Surinamese businesses and workers.

Additionally, work is underway on a model for mine development agreements to establish clear principles for large-scale projects. The legislative process is being supported by the World Bank-funded Suriname Competitiveness and Sector Diversification Project (SCSD) and has involved consultations with government representatives, the private sector, and civil society organizations.
