Suriname River: Body recovered after man falls from vessel

The body of a 46-year-old man, identified as W. A., has been recovered from the Suriname River near the Anandsteiger at Ameraliweg in Meerzorg.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, September 18, around 2:48 PM. Preliminary investigations indicate the man was performing repairs on an outboard motor of a vessel. After completing the work, he attempted to walk toward the pier but reportedly lost his balance and fell into the water between two boats.

Witnesses stated the man disappeared immediately beneath the surface, likely due to the river's strong currents. Following the initial report, the Meerzorg police, the Maritime Department of the Korps Politie Suriname, local fishermen, and volunteers conducted intensive search operations. The victim's body was eventually retrieved near the Anandsteiger, where a physician officially confirmed his death. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
