Suriname targets economic growth through China ties and infrastructure
Suriname is pursuing significant economic expansion through strengthened ties with China and large-scale infrastructure investments. During a reception celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, Vice President Gregory Rusland emphasized that cooperation with China is expected to drive job creation, knowledge transfer, and increased value for the local economy.
The government aims to improve access for Surinamese products, such as cocoa, rice, and timber, to the Chinese market. Cooperation is expected to span sectors including infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, education, and housing. Additionally, Chinese involvement in projects like roads and bridges is intended to provide technical expertise and improve internal connectivity.
Parallel to these diplomatic efforts, Suriname is seeing growth in its hospitality and tourism sectors, fueled by the emerging oil and gas industry. A notable development includes a multi-million dollar investment for a new four-star Holiday Inn hotel at the Eduard Alexander Gummels (EAG) Airport. This project, featuring 85 rooms and conference facilities, is designed to support increasing passenger flows and position the country as a destination for international business and trade.
