Suriname Telecommunications Authority enters legal battle over leadership

The Telecommunications Authority Suriname (TAS) has entered a legal dispute regarding the leadership and authority of Director Wendy Jap-A-Joe. Two injunction hearings were held before Judge Robert Praag to determine who holds the legal power to manage the organization, enter into financial obligations, and represent the regulator.

The Board of Commissioners contends that Jap-A-Joe’s five-year term, established by presidential resolution, expired on October 19, 2026. Consequently, the Board argues she no longer has the authority to sign documents or authorize transactions. The TAS has requested the court to compel Jap-A-Joe to hand over all files and keys, threatening a penalty of SRD 100,000 per hour if she fails to comply.

Jap-A-Joe’s legal team acknowledges the expiration of the official appointment term but argues that a separate employment agreement signed in November 2021 remains in effect. This contract reportedly contains a provision stating she continues her duties until a new decision is made. The Minister of Transport, Communication, and Tourism, along with the President, have both issued written statements confirming that her appointment has legally ended.
