Suriname to tighten traffic enforcement and e-bike rules

Surinamese authorities are implementing stricter measures to improve road safety, particularly targeting young e-bike riders during the upcoming holiday period. Minister of Justice and Safety Harish Monorath has urged parents not to allow children aged eight to twelve to operate e-bikes on public roads due to a lack of necessary traffic knowledge.

To enforce these standards, the police will deploy a special unit to monitor young e-bike users and ensure helmet compliance. Additionally, the government plans to introduce higher traffic fines within the coming weeks.

Beyond e-bike enforcement, broader concerns regarding road safety and public nuisance persist in Suriname. Residents have reported increasing levels of noise pollution caused by modified exhausts on motorcycles and cars, expressing frustration over a perceived lack of government control. Furthermore, observers have noted risks associated with high-speed motorcycle riding and inadequate protective gear among motorists navigating unpredictable road conditions.
