Suriname VP Gregory Rusland Urges Faster Compliance to Prevent Blacklisting

The 6th National Compliance Congress was held on 7 August 2026 at the Oxygen Resort in Paramaribo. Vice President Gregory Rusland, speaking on behalf of President Jennifer Simons, called for accelerated efforts in compliance, transparency and integrity to strengthen Suriname’s financial system and avoid the threat of international blacklisting. He stressed that compliance is not merely about rules but about building trust for sustainable economic development, noting progress in anti‑money‑laundering and counter‑terrorist‑financing measures while urging better implementation.

Minister Andrew Baasaron of Economic Affairs highlighted that compliance requires effective procedures and support for small and medium‑sized enterprises to keep their accounts and banking in order. Winston Wilson, senior partner of the TABTO Group, warned that blacklisting would affect not only banks and companies but “every citizen of Suriname”. He noted that 27 of the 40 recommended anti‑laundering measures have been realised, but further laws and decisions remain pending.
