Surprise Saguaros defeat Scottsdale Scorpions in Arizona Fall League opener
The Surprise Saguaros defeated the Scottsdale Scorpions 9-3 in an Arizona Fall League opener. Peyton Prescott earned the win, pitching five outs and allowing no runs on two hits while striking out one.
New York Mets prospect Cole Mathis made his debut for the Saguaros, going 1-for-4 with an RBI single and a walk. Mathis, who was acquired by the Mets from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for David Peterson, is transitioning into a role as a designated hitter and corner infielder following Tommy John surgery. He recorded hard-hit lineouts during the game as he seeks to regain live at-bats after a season spent moving between different organizations and recovering from injury.
Other Mets prospects contributed to the victory, including Irving Cota, Brendan Girton, and Ryan Lambert. Welbyn Francisca of the Guardians led the Saguaros' offense, going 5-for-5 with a home run, a double, a walk, and a stolen base.
