British Columbia approaches snap election on October 24

British Columbia is preparing for a snap provincial election on October 24, following Premier David Eby's decision to dissolve the legislature. The election call has drawn criticism from opponents who describe it as a cynical move to exploit political instability within the BC Conservative party.

Recent polling from the Angus Reid Institute indicates the BC Conservatives lead the NDP 46 per cent to 43 per cent among decided and leaning voters. The campaign is heavily focused on key regions like Surrey, where both the NDP and Conservatives have promised new hospitals and transit expansions. The Conservatives have proposed replacing the George Massey Tunnel upgrade with a 10-lane bridge.

Elections BC has announced that election-day ballots will be counted by hand due to the logistical challenges and short notice of the snap election. This hybrid system will use electronic tabulators for advance votes, but manual counting for polling station ballots may result in a longer wait for final results. Advance voting saw 891,348 ballots cast, an 11 per cent decrease compared to the 2024 election.
