Surrey breaks ground on $311M Newton Community Centre
Mayor Brenda Locke and four councillors held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new $311-million Newton Community Centre in Surrey. The 175,000-square-foot facility is expected to be completed by 2030 and will include two pools, two gyms, a library, a fitness area, and childcare services.
The project has sparked political debate ahead of the 2026 civic election due to a change in location. The original site was planned for King George Boulevard under the previous administration of Mayor Doug McCallum. However, the site was moved in 2024 following direction from the Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC).
Mayor Locke noted that the current project is significantly larger than the previous plan, stating it is roughly double the footprint and three times the financial cost of the original proposal.
