Surrey City Hall employees dismissed ahead of new administration

Ten long-serving, non-political employees at Surrey City Hall have been dismissed on a “without cause” basis. The terminations reportedly occurred at the request of incoming mayor Doug McCallum prior to the new council being sworn in on November 2.

The move has reportedly triggered more than one million dollars in severance payments. Sources suggest the vacancies may be filled through patronage appointments.

Incumbent Councillor Harry Bains expressed concern regarding the dismissal of non-political staff immediately following an election, calling the situation “something worth investigating.” Outgoing mayor Brenda Locke also commented on the matter, stating she was saddened by the dismissals, noting that some of the affected individuals worked in her own office.
