Surrey mayoral candidates debate infrastructure and arena plans

Candidates in the Surrey mayoral election are presenting competing visions for the city's infrastructure and public safety. Incumbent Brenda Locke of Surrey Connect has proposed a $1.5 billion investment plan, including a 10,000-seat indoor arena near Surrey Central Station, a new firehall, and various aquatic and cultural centers.

Challenging this plan, Linda Annis of the Surrey First party has pledged to cancel the 10,000-seat arena, arguing it risks taxpayer money. Instead, Annis proposes a $555 million redevelopment of the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, featuring a multi-sport aquatic centre, a trade and exhibition centre, and a curling rink. Her broader platform includes a $1.8 billion package for community facilities, increased police presence, and a freeze on residential and business property taxes for 2027.

Other candidates, including Doug McCallum, have focused heavily on public safety and the transition to the Surrey Police Service. The election follows a period of rising crime rates and ongoing debates regarding municipal policing jurisdiction.
