Surrey mosque vandalized in suspected Islamophobic hate crime
A mosque in Surrey, British Columbia, was vandalized over the weekend, an incident the RCMP is investigating as a hate crime. The vandalism at the Fleetwood Islamic Centre occurred between 11 p.m. on Friday, August 28, and 5 a.m. on Saturday, August 29.
Community members discovered threatening graffiti on the mosque walls, including messages such as ‘get out or die!’ and ‘Islam is Trash.’ Additionally, pieces of raw bacon were found hanging from a door handle and near the windows. Haji Asif Ali, general secretary of the Fleetwood Islamic Academy Society, noted that the use of pig products is reminiscent of an incident at a Quebec City mosque prior to a 2017 massacre.
B.C. Premier David Eby and Attorney General Niki Sharma condemned the act, stating that Islamophobia has no place in the province. The National Council of Canadian Muslims has called for elected officials to develop a national strategy to combat Islamophobia, describing the incident as part of a disturbing trend of intimidation against the Muslim community in Canada.
