Surrey opens first of 10 city-supported primary care clinics
The City of Surrey has launched its first of 10 city-supported primary care clinics as part of the Community Medical Clinics initiative. The inaugural clinic opened in Whalley on August 28, 2026, aimed at increasing resident access to family doctors.
Mayor Brenda Locke noted that Surrey currently has approximately 59 family doctors per 100,000 residents, which is less than half the rate found in Vancouver. To address this, the city is covering approximately $100,000 in annual lease and facility costs for each clinic to allow providers to focus resources on recruiting doctors rather than administrative overhead.
Total Life Care Granville Medical (TLC) will manage the facilities. While the city provides the physical space, day-to-day operations remain the responsibility of the doctors, TLC, and the province. A second clinic is expected to open in Newton within the next month.
