Surrey woodland felling sparks controversy over heathland restoration

A controversial woodland felling project has commenced in the Surrey Hills as part of a major heathland restoration initiative at Green Farm. The Countryside Regeneration Trust (CRT) is clearing pine plantations between Beacon Hill and Churt, including areas behind Linkside North and Eight Acres.

The project has faced significant local opposition, with some critics describing the scale of the felling as ‘ecocide’. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact on local wildlife, such as deer and badgers, and whether the work honors the legacy of benefactor John Broadbent-Jones, who donated Green Farm to the CRT. MP Greg Stafford has also raised questions about the scheme, which is expected to radically alter a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for decades. The felling programme is scheduled to continue through November.
